Research interests

His research is organised around two main lines. The first is epidemiological: identifying risk and protective factors for suicidality, depression, self-harm, school violence and substance use among children, adolescents and young adults. The second is the evaluation of interventions: testing the efficacy and effectiveness of universal, selective and indicated prevention programmes that address these problems, delivered mainly in school and university settings, including interventions based on cognitive-behavioural therapy and school mental health programmes.

Across both lines, his work seeks to understand the heterogeneity of symptom trajectories over time, the role of psychological variables such as psychological inflexibility and sense of belonging, and the social and environmental determinants of young people's mental wellbeing.

Scientific output

He has authored 113 publications in scientific journals and has led or co-led 29 research projects funded by Chile's National Agency for Research and Development (ANID) and other national and international funders (Wellcome Trust, Academy of Finland, among others).
